SOLID WOOD FLOORING
Solid wood floors are made up of single pieces of natural wood, typically ¾ thick. Solid wood flooring can be refinished dozens of times and will last a lifetime. Sizes offered are usually ¾” x 2 ¼” (thickness x width). Other widths include 3″, 3 ¼”, 4″, 4 ¼”, and 5″. A 5/16″ is also offered, but ¾” is the most popular.
ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING
Engineered hardwood floors have multiple layers of wood glued together and are compressed much like plywood. This process adds strength and stability to the boards. The top layer, or face, of each board is called the “wear layer”. Depending on the thickness of the wear layer, engineered floors can only be refinished one or two times. Sizes vary with width and thickness of wood. Engineered wood sizes for thickness are 3/8″, 5/16″, 7/16″, ½”, 5/8″ and ¾”. As for widths, they vary from 3″ to 12″+.
